Macedonian Government adopts constitutional changes enabling new country’s name

The Government of Macedonia endorsed four constitutional amendments to allow for the replacement of its old name into a new one agreed by its Prime Minister Zoran Zaev, and his Greek counterpart Alexis Tsipras last June, the Beta news agency reported.

The next move is up to the country’s parliament which will need 80 votes, i.e., the two-thirds of deputies in favour of the changes in line with Skopje – Athens agreement. The country’s new name will be the Republic of North Macedonia. The Parliament speaker Talat Xhaferi said he expected the assembly to pass the constitutional amendments on January 15 next year after the procedure was completed.
