Statue of Croatia's first president Tudjman unveiled in Zagreb

A four-metre-tall statue of Croatia's first president, Franjo Tudjman, was unveiled in the centre of Zagreb on Monday, on the occasion of the 19th anniversary of Tudjman's death.

Prime Minister Andrej Plenkovic, leader of the ruling centre-right Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ) founded by Tudjman in 1989, also attended the ceremony. Franjo Tudjman became Croatia’s first president in 1990 and began paving the way for Croatia’s independence from Yugoslavia, which the country declared in 1991. He served as president during Croatia’s war of independence, which ended in the summer of 1995, and remained in power until his death
