Bucharest takes over EU presidency, Belgrade hopes for support

Romania has taken over the rotating European Union Presidency as of Tuesday for the first time since it joined the Union in January 2007, as the bloc faces Brexit, rising nationalism and populism in many member states and EU parliamentary elections in May, while Belgrade hopes for Bucharest's support in the accession talks with the EU.

The country’s six-month term will be under the motto: "Cohesion, a common European value," Radio Free Europe (RFE) reported. However, there are some doubts about the Romanian capability of heading the EU. The President of the European Commission Jean-Claude Juncker said the "Bucharest government has not fully understood what it means to preside over the countries of the EU."
