Plans to build national football stadium meet with opposition in Serbia

The Serbian authorities have announced plans to build a 100-million Euro national football stadium on the outskirts of Belgrade, drawing criticism from the opposition and investment experts.

The authorities said the stadium would be able to accommodate 60,000 fans and will be built on what is now farm land in the suburb of Surcin. Foreign investment consultant Mahmut Busatlija told N1 that he sees no reason to build the stadium. “It’s better for us if it costs less since we all pay public debt and this is the public debt being used to sponsor a sport which has shown no results in 30 years,” he said.
