As a court delivers its verdict on the alleged killers of Serbian newspaper editor Slavko Curuvija in 1999, some of his closest allies look back on his career and explain why Slobodan Milosevic’s regime targeted him.
I met Slavko Curuvija through [his] articles,” says Belgrade journalist Perica Gunjic, a colleague of the Serbian journalist whose murder 22 years ago will be the focus of a court verdict in Belgrade on Thursday. “When I came to [daily newspaper] Borba in 1990, he was a reporter and political analyst, and known for writing a couple of pamphlets, one of which I remember was about the people from Goli Otok [political prison in Socialist Yugoslavia],” Gunjic recalled.
